Hotel the YARD provides a peaceful retreat in the middle of the bustling German capital. It is conveniently located in between the Mitte and Kreuzberg districts, just 2 minutes away from the nearest U-Bahn station and a 30-minute train ride from Berlin Tegel airport. Kreuzberg is one of the most lively and interesting districts in the city, a mix of urban flair, artistic sensibilities and unique multicultural influences. Two of the city’s most visited attractions are within walking distance from the hotel: the Jewish Museum is just 700 meters away, while the East Side Gallery (the longest remaining piece of the Berlin Wall) is a great excuse to get out, stroll and explore the area.
Style and Facilities
Describing itself as a “green oasis in the middle of the city,” The YARD takes great pride in its beautiful gardens, designed by Swiss landscape architect Enzo Enea. The gardens, a work of art in and of themselves, are represented on all seven levels of the hotel, giving it a pleasant and cohesive theme.
The wellness area (in construction at the time of writing) boasts a large indoor swimming pool, a Finnish sauna, steam bath and fitness center, directly accessible from the gardens, all of which offer a much welcome respite from the bustling city. Hotel guests can access the wellness area for a fixed rate of €8 per person for the entire stay (including bath robe, towel, slippers and shower gel).
The hotel’s 55 guest rooms come in three varieties (Premium, Business and Exclusive), all of which have high-quality interiors in terms of both design and comfort, with sleek décor, minimalist sensibilities and plenty of practical features. Furnished with natural colors and materials, the rooms are modern and polished, yet charming and warm. All rooms come equipped with coffee machines, free WiFi, an electronic safe and individually-adjustable air-conditioning.
Bistro the YARD, the hotel’s restaurant, which seats up to 51 people, offers regional delicacies, as well as lighter meals, snacks, coffee and drinks. The impressive breakfast buffet, which includes a wide selection of breakfast favorites and some more adventurous offerings (the smoothies were personal favorites of this reviewer), is also served at Bistro the YARD (6:30am-10:30am on weekdays, 7:30am-2pm on weekends and holidays). The adjacent lounge area is cozy and inviting, as suitable for afternoon tea as it is for a nightcap, while the meeting room offers great views of the garden and courtyard.
Why we love it:
When architect Peter Külby happened upon the famous Via Montenapoleone, a peaceful green courtyard in between two houses in Milan, he was inspired to design a hotel in Berlin that would follow the same principle and fulfill the same function: to provide an idyllic green oasis in the middle of the hectic city. Hotel the YARD, with its beautiful gardens, is what became of that idea, a sleek, modern and minimalist hotel, providing a relaxing refuge in the middle of the German capital, carefully curated and deeply storied.
