1. Gamla Stan (Old Town)
Start your tour of Stockholm by exploring Gamla Stan – the city’s historic centre occupying an island of its own (Stockholm spans a total of 14 different islands). Stockholm’s old town is one of Europe’s best preserved and most appealing, packed with exquisite cafés (perfect for an afternoon “fika”, a quintessentially Swedish tradition of coffee and cake) and artisan boutiques. Venture off the main tourist thoroughfare (Västerlånggatan) and be rewarded by discovering the tiniest cobbled alleys imaginable. Wander on your own or join our Travel Club and get the best deals on guided city tours.
2. Vasa Museum
The museum’s showpiece is the Vasa, an old Viking ship that sunk in Stockholm’s harbor back in 1628. This ship, which spent an entire 333 years under water, is the only one of its kind in the entire world. If you were to only visit one museum while in Stockholm, make it this one – guided tours available.
3. Södermalm (SoFo)
Stockholm enjoys a well-deserved reputation of one of the world’s hippest cities. To see what the fuss is all about, head to its island neighborhood of Södermalm (south of Folkungagatan) – packed with vintage stores, trendy second-hand boutiques and bohemian cafes, SoFo is great for getting a feel for Stockholm’s cool side and people-watching.
While in Södermalm, make time to visit Fotografiska – an incredible contemporary photography gallery with a constantly changing array of photo exhibitions (4 large and about 20 smaller ones presented every year). The sweeping view from its top floor café is a pleasant bonus.
5. Stockholm Archipelago
With summer just around the corner, what better time to fully take advantage of Stockholm’s archipelago? An incredible 30,000 small islands (many uninhabited) lie starting at just a few minutes’ boat ride away from the city center. If you wish to remain in the city proper and still take advantage if its extensive waterways, try exploring Stockholm by boat.
