REVIEW: AGORA Fukuoka Hilltop Hotel & Spa, Fukuoka, Japan

Built on the contrast between the excitement of the city of Fukuoka and the tranquility that the hotel provides from its hilltop location, the AGORA Fukuoka Hilltop Hotel & Spa offers serenity, luxury and extreme comfort, not to mention some of the best views to be found anywhere in the city.

As the name suggests, the AGORA enjoys a privileged location atop a hill that overlooks the Fukuoka city center and surrounding districts, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the cityscape, especially after dark. Yet the hotel can be reached in as little as 15 minutes from the central JR Hakata Station, the city’s main transport hub. The hotel even offers complimentary shuttle bus services several times per day, with stops at the aforementioned JR Hakata Station and Yakuin Station.

Services and Facilities

The hotel features a small but well-stocked fitness room, as well as two spa rooms, where staff members perform holistic therapy treatments. As one would expect, many of these come with spectacular views.

The hotel’s onsen (traditional Japanese hot spring baths) are a particular highlight and should under no circumstances be missed. They come complete with a sauna, hot and cold baths and relaxing views of greenery, perfect for a contemplative dip.

Interestingly, the hotel also has a small library by the lobby with a decent selection of free-to-borrow books and comfortable reading chairs, as well as a quaint hotel shop offering selected items and souvenirs, all stylish and of the highest quality.

The AGORA offers both Western and Japanese style rooms. The latter feature tatami-matted floors, futon beds and sliding rice-paper doors and windows, yet include all the modern amenities one would expect, in line with the hotel’s Japanese modernist style.

Both room types are modern, spacious and fully equipped, and boast – you guessed it – fabulous views of the city below.

Guests have three dining options at AGORA. Koyomi is a Japanese kaiseki restaurant (traditional multi-course Japanese dinner) which focuses on fresh seasonal ingredients from around the country. Garden Restaurant K is an open-air bar and restaurant with spectacular views over the city, where each table is equipped with its own grill and guests can help themselves to anything they like from the buffet for their own private barbecue. The Marcus Square Fukuoka, finally, is a restaurant and lounge-bar area, perfect for evening drinks.

Why we love it:

The AGORA Fukuoka Hilltop Hotel & Spa is a place of contrasts: a tranquil respite from the excitement of the city below, an intimate yet luxurious hotel, and a blend of Japanese tradition and modern design and comfort. But what most stands out (aside from the views, of course) is the professional service and impeccable hospitality, representative of a staff that strives to help guests find tranquility in this “hilltop sanctuary”.
